TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

Trinidad and Tobago is a twin-island sovereign state, a dual-island Caribbean nation near Venezuela, with distinctive Creole traditions and cuisines. It shares maritime boundaries with Barbados to the northeast, Grenada to the northwest, Guyana to the southeast, and Venezuela to the south and west.

Trinidad and Tobago became an independent state in 1962, after gaining its sovereignty from The United Kingdom. Its population is 1,226,383 (2012) and the nation has a density of 239 people per square kilometer.

Port-of-Spain, located on the northwestern coast of Trinidad, with a population of 49,031 people is the political center of Trinidad and Tobago, which is considered a Republic, and home to its Ceremonial head of state.

Trinidad and Tobago is one of the wealthiest countries in the Caribbean, thanks to its large reserves of oil and gas, the exploitation of which dominates its economy.

Inhabited mostly by people of African and Indian descent, the two-island state enjoys a per capita income well above the average for Latin America.

Between the years 1972 and 1983, profits from oil greatly increased the living standards in Trinidad. In fact, since late 2003, the country has entered a second oil boom and it is now one of the most prosperous island nations in the Caribbean.

With over 470 species of birds, over 600 tropical butterflies including the spectacular Emperor, hundreds of rivers and waterfalls and an abundance of eco-adventures, it’s no wonder why Trinidad and Tobago won the 2015 UK Telegraph Caribbean Travel Award for Best Destination for Nature Holiday.

T&T is the Happiest Country in the Caribbean – In 2015 (and 2013), the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network, ranked Trinidad and Tobago the Caribbean’s happiest country.

This tiny twin-island

republic offers an enticing mix of cultural activities and eco-adventure. Lively Trinidad, the larger of the two, boasts energetic nightlife in modern capital Port-of-Spain who also hosts a boisterous carnival featuring calypso and soca music. Tobago, two hours away by fast ferry, is comparatively serene. Azure seas contrast with pale pink sands and golden sunsets. Protected rainforest and stunning coral reefs complete this paradise.
